The workshop contains all the equipment and materials for the semi-mechanised production of these wooden shoes, believed to have been invented by the Gauls. It remained in commercial production until the last Lautrec clogmaker M. Bonhoure retired in the 1960s.
Originally the clogs were carved entirely by hand, one man producing only 3 or 4 pairs a day but the arrival of electricity around 1930 enabled machines to be installed, increasing the rate of production ten-fold. Although the machines shaped and hollowed out the clogs, the careful finishing continued to by done by hand.
